02 What comes to the bench

Four kinds of piece. One patient bench.

The workshop lists these as its repair and restoration work. Each piece has its own assessment.

  1. 01

    Longcase clocks

Tall-case movements, their pendulums and weights, and the cases that hold them. Collection can be arranged locally in the York area.

  2. 02

    Mantel & bracket clocks

From repairing a stopped movement to restoring painted dials and cases.

  3. 03

    Wall & early electric clocks

Wall-hung pendulum clocks and early electric clocks, each assessed on its own mechanism.

  4. 04

    Antique barometers

Antique barometers sit alongside clocks in the workshop's listed restoration work.

03 Behind the dial

Listen. Open. Polish. Set it in beat.

How a restoration generally unfolds. An illustration of the craft, not a record of a specific job.

  1. Listen

What is the clock doing, and what changed? A stopped, uneven or silent clock tells the restorer where to look first.

  2. Open the movement

Wheels, anchor and pendulum each need their own attention once the plates are apart.

  3. Bring back the dial

The workshop lists brass dial silvering and lacquering and hand re-bluing among its finishing work.

  4. Set it in beat

Reassembled and regulated, the tick and the tock fall evenly again. Once it is home, a pendulum clock may still need positioning.

05 How a place works

From an email to an even beat.

  1. I

Email to ask for a place

The workshop's notice invites email to join its virtual waiting list. Nothing is booked by asking.

  2. II

    The workshop replies

Marshall Clocks decides whether and when it can take a piece on. Please don't visit without an appointment.

  3. III

    By appointment, or local collection

Work is strictly by appointment, with local collection in the York area.

  4. IV

    Home, level and in beat

After it returns, a pendulum clock may need correct positioning and regulation.

Why setup matters: hear the beat

A pendulum clock on an uneven floor can tick unevenly, "tick… tock-tick". Tilt the illustrated case and watch the spacing.

Out of beat: the tock arrives early. The workshop handles this kind of setup.
